The Cluttered Title Bar
As Google Chrome has evolved, Google has added various buttons to the top title bar area alongside your open tabs. One of the more prominent additions is the “Search Tabs” arrow (a small, downward-facing chevron icon usually located at the extreme top-left or top-right, depending on your OS). Clicking this opens a dropdown allowing you to search through all open and recently closed tabs. While helpful for users who keep dozens of tabs open, minimalists who only keep a few tabs active find this persistent icon unnecessary, as it clutters the interface and takes up valuable space in the title bar.
Banishing the Arrow
To achieve a cleaner aesthetic and completely disable the Search Tabs arrow from the Google Chrome toolbar, you must utilize the browser’s hidden experimental flags menu, as there is no simple toggle in the standard settings.
Open a new tab in Google Chrome. Click into the main address bar, type exactly chrome://flags, and press Enter to access the developer experiments page. At the top of the screen, you will see a search box. Type Search Tabs into this box. Look through the filtered results below for a specific flag labelled something like “Enable Tab Search” or “Tab Search icon.” Once you locate the correct flag, click the dropdown menu on its right (which will likely be set to “Default”) and change it to Disabled. A large blue Relaunch button will appear at the bottom of your browser window. Click it. When Chrome restarts, the small downward arrow will be completely gone from your title bar.
