Pop-ups are widely considered one of the most annoying aspects of browsing the internet, which is why Google Chrome includes a robust, built-in pop-up blocker that is turned on by default. However, many legitimate business and educational websites rely on pop-ups to function properly. For example, a banking website might use a pop-up to display a secure login portal, or a university portal might open a downloaded PDF syllabus in a new pop-up window. When Chrome blocks these essential windows, it can break the website entirely, forcing you to disable the blocker.
How to Allow Pop-ups for a Specific Website (Recommended)
You should almost never disable the pop-up blocker universally across the entire internet, as this will expose you to malicious advertising. The safest approach is to allow pop-ups only for the specific website you are currently trying to use.
- Open Google Chrome and navigate to the website that is failing to load its pop-up window.
- Attempt to trigger the pop-up (e.g., click the “Log In” or “Download” button).
- Look at the far right side of your Chrome address bar (the URL bar at the top of the screen). You will see a small icon that looks like a miniature browser window with a red ‘X’ over it. This indicates Chrome just blocked a pop-up.
- Click that Pop-up blocked icon.
- A small menu will drop down. Select the radio button next to Always allow pop-ups and redirects from [website name].
- Click the blue Done button.
- Refresh the webpage and click your button again. The pop-up will now open successfully.
How to Disable the Pop-up Blocker Universally
If you are using an internal company network or a testing environment where you need absolutely zero interference from Chrome, you can turn the blocker off completely.
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of the browser window to open the main menu.
- Select Settings from the dropdown list.
- In the left-hand sidebar menu, click on Privacy and security.
- In the main window, click on Site settings.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Pop-ups and redirects (located under the “Content” section).
- Under the “Default behavior” heading, click the radio button next to Sites can send pop-ups and use redirects.
Chrome will now allow any website on the internet to open new windows automatically without asking for your permission.
