Why Does Chrome Show Red Squiggles?
Google Chrome features a built-in spell checker designed to help you avoid typos when filling out web forms, writing emails, or posting on forums. Whenever you type a word that does not exist in Chrome’s local dictionary, the browser automatically underlines it with a jagged red line.
While useful for standard writing, this feature is incredibly annoying if you are typing in a specialized field. If you frequently type coding syntax, medical terminology, unique brand names, or if you write in a mixture of two different languages, your screen will be covered in bright red squiggles that make your text difficult to read. Rather than right-clicking and manually adding hundreds of unique words to the dictionary, you can turn off the spell checker entirely.
How to Disable the Chrome Spell Checker
You can turn off the automatic spell-checking engine directly in the Chrome language settings.
- Open Google Chrome on your desktop.
- Click the More (three dots) icon in the top-right corner of the window.
- Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Languages.
- Look for the section labelled Spell check.
- You will see a toggle switch next to the words “Check for spelling errors when you type text on web pages.”
- Toggle the switch to the OFF (gray) position.
Once disabled, all existing red squiggly lines will instantly disappear from any open text boxes, and Chrome will completely stop monitoring your keystrokes for spelling errors across all websites.
