How to Create Formatted Lists and Bullet Points in Google Keep

For years, Google Keep was strictly a minimalist text pad that lacked any advanced word processing features. Users were forced to rely on complex third-party tools if they wanted to structure a document. Recently, Google overhauled the Keep engine, quietly injecting a native rich-text formatting system. You no longer have to stare at massive blocks of unreadable text; you can now construct highly organized bulleted lists, numbered procedures, and structurally formatted meeting notes directly inside the application.

Enabling Rich Text Formatting

To use these advanced layout features, you must first ensure you have the proper tools exposed in the interface.

  1. Open a brand new or existing note in Google Keep (on the web or mobile app).
  2. Look at the row of icons at the bottom of the note window.
  3. Click the Formatting icon (it looks like an underlined ‘A’).

A completely new secondary toolbar will instantly appear at the bottom of your screen, exposing standard word processing controls (Bold, Italic, Underline, and the H1/H2 heading sizes).

Creating Numbered and Bulleted Lists

Unlike the standard “Checkbox” list (which creates a separate, physical to-do item that you can cross off), bulleted and numbered lists are strictly for formatting paragraphs of text into readable chunks.

  1. Ensure the Formatting toolbar is open.
  2. Click into the main body of your note where you want the list to begin.
  3. Click either the Bulleted List icon (three dots with lines) or the Numbered List icon (1, 2, 3 with lines) in the formatting toolbar.
  4. Type your first item and press Enter.

Google Keep’s intelligent text engine will automatically generate the next bullet point or sequential number on the following line. If you are creating a complex, multi-tiered document (like a legal outline), you can press the Tab key on your keyboard to instantly indent the current bullet point and create a sub-list. Press Shift + Tab to break out of the sub-list and return to the primary margin.

Using Keyboard Markdown

If you prefer to keep your hands locked on the keyboard, Google Keep supports rapid markdown triggers to instantly format text without ever touching the mouse.

  • To create a bulleted list instantly, simply type an asterisk (*) or a hyphen (-) followed by a space. The engine will instantly convert it into a formatted bullet point.
  • To create a numbered list, type 1. (the number one followed by a period) and press space.
