How to Create Automatic Numbered Lists in Google Keep

Google Keep is famous for its simple, interactive checkbox lists, which are perfect for grocery shopping or daily to-do tasks. However, if you are drafting a sequential procedure—such as a recipe or a step-by-step technical guide—checkboxes are not appropriate. You need a properly formatted, sequentially numbered list. While Google Keep lacks the massive formatting toolbar found in Google Docs, it does possess a hidden “markdown-style” auto-formatting engine that can generate perfectly indented numbered lists.

How to Trigger Automatic Numbering

To create a numbered list, you must manually type the first number and let Google Keep’s auto-formatting engine take over.

  1. Open Google Keep (on your mobile app or via the web browser).
  2. Click the “Take a note…” bar to create a standard, blank text note. (Do not click the “New list” checkbox icon).
  3. Type the number 1. (a one followed immediately by a period), and then press the Spacebar.
  4. Type your first sentence (e.g., Preheat the oven to 350 degrees).
  5. Press the Enter (or Return) key on your keyboard.

The moment you press Enter, Google Keep will automatically indent the line and instantly generate the number 2. on the next line down. You can now type your second instruction, press Enter again, and the system will automatically generate the number 3., and so on.

How to Create Sub-Items and Indentations

If you are creating a complex outline, you might need sub-items (e.g., a sub-step beneath step 2). Google Keep supports basic multi-level list formatting.

While your cursor is resting next to the newly generated number (before you have typed any text), simply press the Tab key on your keyboard. (Note: This requires a physical keyboard and is generally not supported on mobile touchscreens without specific third-party keyboards).

Pressing Tab will push the number inward and change the formatting sequence. If you were on step 2, pressing Tab might change the line to an indented a. or a bullet point, depending on the exact context of your list.

How to Exit the Numbered List

When you have finished typing your final instruction and want to return to writing standard, unformatted paragraph text, simply press the Enter key twice in a row. The first press will generate the next number in the sequence, and the second press will instantly delete that empty number and slam your cursor back to the far-left margin, terminating the auto-formatting engine.
