The Application Simulation Vector
Many modern web applications, such as Spotify, Notion, or Slack, function identically to native desktop software. However, forcing users to constantly open a full browser window, type in a URL, and navigate through tabs just to access a primary workflow tool is highly inefficient. Google Chrome includes a feature that bridges this gap, allowing you to extract any website from the browser and treat it exactly like a standalone application installed directly on your operating system.
How to Create a Desktop Shortcut
You can instruct Chrome to package a website into a dedicated window, complete with its own taskbar icon and desktop shortcut, entirely devoid of standard browser elements like the address bar or bookmarks.
1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Navigate to the specific website you wish to convert into an application.
3. Click the three vertical dots in the extreme top-right corner to open the main menu.
4. Hover your cursor over More tools.
5. Select Create shortcut… from the secondary menu.
6. A small dialogue box will appear. You can rename the shortcut here if you wish (e.g., changing “Spotify – Web Player” to just “Spotify”).
7. Crucial Step: Tick the checkbox labelled Open as window.
8. Click the blue Create button.
Chrome will instantly close the tab and relaunch the website in a clean, minimalist window. A permanent icon will also appear on your desktop. You can now pin this icon directly to your taskbar, allowing you to launch the web application with a single click, completely independent of your primary browsing sessions.
