How to Connect a Bluetooth Mouse to a Chromebook

While the built-in trackpad on most Chromebooks is perfectly fine for casual web browsing, it can become incredibly frustrating if you are trying to meticulously edit a spreadsheet, play a game, or simply prefer the ergonomic feel of a physical device. Adding a wireless Bluetooth mouse instantly transforms your Chromebook into a much more capable desktop-style workstation.

Because Chrome OS uses standard Bluetooth protocols, you do not need to buy a specific “Chromebook Mouse.” Any standard Bluetooth mouse from Logitech, Microsoft, or Apple will connect flawlessly in seconds without requiring any third-party driver installations.

Step 1: Put the Mouse in Pairing Mode

Your Chromebook cannot connect to the mouse if the mouse is not actively broadcasting a signal. This is where most people get stuck.

1. Ensure your mouse has fresh batteries or is fully charged.
2. Turn the physical power switch on the bottom of the mouse to the ON position.
3. Locate the Bluetooth Pairing Button. This is usually a small, circular button on the bottom of the mouse, often marked with the jagged ‘B’ Bluetooth logo.
4. Press and hold the pairing button for about 3 to 5 seconds.
5. A small LED light on the mouse (either on the top near the scroll wheel or on the bottom) will begin to blink rapidly. This aggressive blinking confirms the mouse is now in discovery mode.

Step 2: Connect the Mouse to the Chromebook

Now that the mouse is broadcasting its location, you must instruct the Chromebook to look for it.

1. On your Chromebook, look at the bottom-right corner of the screen. Click on the time/battery area to open the Quick Settings panel.
2. Ensure the main Bluetooth icon is colored blue (meaning the Bluetooth radio is turned on).
3. Click the small arrow pointing downward right beneath the Bluetooth icon.
4. Click on Pair new device. Your Chromebook is now actively scanning the room.
5. Look under the “Available devices” list. Within a few seconds, the name of your mouse (e.g., “Logitech MX Master 3” or simply “Bluetooth Mouse”) will appear.
6. Click the name of the mouse on the screen.

The blinking LED on the physical mouse will turn solid, confirming a successful handshake. A cursor will immediately appear on your Chromebook screen, and you can begin using the mouse immediately.

Customizing Mouse Settings (Speed and Scrolling)

Once connected, you might find that the mouse cursor moves way too fast across the screen, or that the scroll wheel operates in the opposite direction of what you are used to. Chrome OS allows you to adjust these hardware settings directly.

1. Open the Quick Settings panel again (click the time in the bottom right).
2. Click the Gear icon at the top of the panel to open the main Chrome OS Settings.
3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Device.
4. Click on Mouse. (Note: This option is entirely hidden unless a mouse is actively connected).
5. Here, you can adjust the Mouse speed slider to make the cursor more precise.
6. If scrolling a web page feels “backwards,” find the toggle switch for Enable reverse scrolling and flip it to match your preference.
