Screen Pinning (sometimes called App Pinning) is a security feature in Android that allows you to lock the screen to a single application. When enabled, a user must enter the device PIN to exit the app and access the rest of the phone. While this sounds ideal for handing your phone to a child to play a game, it can be problematic in enterprise environments or shared-device scenarios. If an employee accidentally pins a full-screen app and forgets the device PIN, the phone becomes completely unusable until a hard reset is performed.
This guide explains how to completely disable the Screen Pinning feature system-wide on your Android smartphone to prevent accidental lock-ins.
Disable Screen Pinning via Security Settings
To ensure users cannot lock the device into a single application loop, you must disable the feature deep within the advanced security settings.
- Open the main Settings app on your Android smartphone.
- Scroll down and tap on Security & privacy (or just “Security” on older Android versions).
- Scroll to the absolute bottom of this menu and tap on More security settings (or “Advanced”).
- Locate and tap on App pinning (or “Screen pinning”).
- At the top of the screen, you will see a master toggle switch labelled Use app pinning.
- Tap the switch to toggle it to the Off (grey) position.
Verify the Restriction
Disabling this switch removes the pinning functionality from the multitasking interface immediately.
To verify the restriction is active, open any application (like Chrome or the Calculator). Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold to enter the Recents (multitasking) overview menu. Tap the app icon at the very top of the app preview card. A drop-down menu will appear showing options like “App info” and “Split top.” The Pin icon and option will be completely absent from this menu. It is now impossible for any user to lock the Android interface to a single application.
