How to Completely Disable ‘Nearby Share’ (Quick Share) on Android

Modern Android smartphones include a built-in file-sharing protocol called “Nearby Share” (recently rebranded to “Quick Share” in collaboration with Samsung). This feature uses a combination of Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct, and ultra-wideband technology to instantly detect other Android devices physically close to you, allowing you to wirelessly beam photos, videos, and large files directly to them without an internet connection.

While this is incredibly convenient for sharing photos with family members, it is a significant security and privacy concern if left enabled in public spaces. By default, your phone may periodically broadcast its presence to scan for nearby devices. If you have the visibility settings configured incorrectly, strangers on a bus or in a coffee shop can see your device’s name and attempt to send you unsolicited files or malicious payloads (a practice known as “cyber-flashing”). If you rarely share files wirelessly and prefer to keep your device’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios strictly private, you must completely disable the Nearby Share background scanner.

Disabling Nearby Share via Device Settings

You can completely castrate the Quick Share protocol, preventing your phone from broadcasting its presence or scanning for others.

  1. Open the main Settings app on your Android smartphone.
  2. Scroll down the menu and tap on Google (or “Google Services & preferences”).
  3. Tap on Devices & sharing.
  4. Tap on Quick Share (on older devices, this will still be labelled Nearby Share).
  5. At the very top of the screen, you will see a master toggle switch labelled Use Quick Share (or “Use Nearby Share”).
  6. Tap the toggle switch to turn it Off.
  7. Next, to ensure absolute privacy, look at the “Who can share with you” section. Ensure the Device visibility toggle is also switched Off.

The change takes effect instantly. Your Android phone will immediately power down the background Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) scanning mechanisms used by the protocol. Your device will no longer show up on other people’s screens when they attempt to share a file, and you are fully protected from unsolicited wireless file transfers while in public spaces.
