How to View the Exact RAM Usage of Every Chrome Tab on a Mac

Google Chrome is notorious for consuming a massive amount of system memory (RAM). When you have dozens of tabs open, your Mac might start to feel sluggish, the cooling fans might spin up to maximum speed, and you may even see a “Your system has run out of application memory” warning.

When this happens, the standard macOS Activity Monitor is surprisingly unhelpful. If you open Activity Monitor, you will just see twenty different processes all named “Google Chrome Helper,” making it impossible to know which specific tab or website is actually causing the problem.

Fortunately, Google Chrome has its own built-in Task Manager that reveals exactly how much RAM and CPU every single tab, extension, and background process is using. This guide explains how to access Chrome’s hidden Task Manager on a Mac to identify and close memory hogs.

How to Open the Chrome Task Manager

The Chrome Task Manager is hidden in the developer menus, but it is easily accessible if you know where to look or what keyboard shortcut to use.

Method 1: Using the Menu Bar

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Click on the three vertical dots (the Customize and control Google Chrome menu) in the top-right corner of the browser window.
  3. Hover your mouse over More Tools.
  4. Click on Task Manager.

Method 2: Using a Keyboard Shortcut

Because the Mac keyboard does not have a dedicated “Escape” key in the same way Windows does (where Shift+Esc opens the Chrome Task Manager), there is no default shortcut on macOS.   • Subframe: These are usually embedded widgets, advertisements, or cross-site tracking scripts running silently inside a tab.

How to Kill a Tab or Extension

Once you have identified the tab or extension that is consuming too much RAM, you can force it to close directly from this window.

  1. Click on the offending row in the Task Manager to highlight it in blue.
  2. Click the End process button in the bottom-right corner of the window.

If you killed a tab, that tab will instantly crash in your main browser window, displaying the “Aw, Snap!” error screen. This immediately frees up the RAM. If you need to view that page again later, you can simply refresh the crashed tab to reload it from scratch.
