Google Chrome for Android defaults to a “Tab Grouping” layout. When you open a link in a new tab, Chrome automatically bundles it together with your current tab in a group, displaying a bottom toolbar with tiny icons to switch between them. While Google designed this to help organize browsing, many users find it confusing, visually cluttered, and much slower than the traditional “waterfall” tab switcher.
If you want to return to a simple, individual tab list without forced groups, you can disable this feature by tweaking Chrome’s hidden experimental flags.
How to Disable Tab Groups in Chrome Android
Because Google frequently updates the Chrome interface, the exact flags can change. However, you can currently disable grouping using these steps:
- Open the Google Chrome app on your Android device.
- Tap the address bar at the top of the screen and type exactly:
chrome://flags - Press Enter or Go on your keyboard. This opens the hidden Experiments menu.
- In the “Search flags” search bar at the very top, type the word: Tab Groups.
- Look for the flag named Tab Groups (or Tab Grid Layout in older versions).
- Tap the drop-down menu under the flag (it will likely say “Default”) and change it to Disabled.
- Chrome will prompt you to restart the browser. Tap the blue Relaunch button at the bottom of the screen.
Important Note on Restarting
Sometimes, simply tapping the Relaunch button isn’t enough to force the new user interface to load. If you restart Chrome and still see tab groups:
- Open your phone’s recent apps menu.
- Swipe Chrome away to force-close it completely.
- Re-open the Chrome app from your home screen.
Your tabs should now appear as individual cards without the bottom toolbar or forced grouping, restoring the classic Android browsing experience.
