How to Search Your Browsing History in Google Chrome

We have all been there: you read an incredible article or found the perfect recipe two days ago, but you forgot to bookmark it, and now you cannot remember the website’s name. Instead of blindly guessing URLs, you can search your Google Chrome browsing history to track it down in seconds.

Chrome keeps a detailed, searchable log of every single website you have visited on your computer (and your phone, if your Google account is synced). By mastering the history search function, you can quickly retrieve lost research and resume interrupted tasks.

The Fastest Way: Keyboard Shortcuts

The quickest way to access your browsing history is by using the universal keyboard shortcut. This works on almost any operating system.

  • Windows and Chromebooks: Press Ctrl + H
  • Mac: Press Cmd + Y (Command + Y)

A new tab will instantly open displaying a chronological list of every website you have visited, grouped by date.

How to Search the History Log

If you are looking for a page you visited last week, scrolling through thousands of links is impossible. You need to use the search bar.

  1. Look at the top of the History page. You will see a large search bar labeled ‘Search history’.
  2. Type a keyword related to the website you are looking for. You do not need to know the exact URL. If you read an article about space, try typing ‘NASA’, ‘telescope’, or ‘galaxy’.
  3. Press Enter.

Chrome will instantly filter your massive history log and display only the web pages that contain your search term in the title or the URL.

How to Delete Specific Items from Your History

If you found the webpage you were looking for, but you also noticed a few embarrassing Google searches in the list that you want to get rid of, you don’t have to clear your entire history.

  1. Hover your mouse over the specific history entry you want to remove.
  2. A small box will appear to the left of the item. Click the box to check it.
  3. You can check as many boxes as you like.
  4. Once you have selected the items you want to delete, click the Delete button in the top-right corner of the screen.

Privacy and Sync Limitations

It is important to remember that if you are signed into Chrome with your Google Account, your history is synced across all your devices. If you delete a link from your laptop’s history, it will also vanish from your phone’s history.

If you frequently need to research topics without leaving a trail in your history log, you should use Incognito Mode (Ctrl + Shift + N) instead of constantly deleting entries after the fact.
