If a friend or family member asks to borrow your laptop for a few minutes to check their email, handing them your computer can be stressful. If they use your Chrome profile, they could accidentally see your saved passwords, your private bookmarks, or mess up your YouTube recommendations.
Worse, if they log into their own Gmail account, it might conflict with your Google accounts. The best way to share your browser safely is by using Guest Mode.
What is Guest Mode?
Guest Mode creates a temporary, isolated browsing session. When someone uses Guest Mode:
- They cannot see any of your browsing history, bookmarks, or saved passwords.
- They are not logged into any of your accounts.
- When they close the window, all of their browsing history, cookies, and downloaded files are instantly deleted from the computer.
It is similar to Incognito Mode, but completely separated from your main profile.
How to Enable Guest Mode
- Open Google Chrome on your computer.
- Look at the top-right corner of the browser window and click on your Profile Icon (it is usually your Google account picture or your initials, located right next to the three-dot menu).
- A drop-down menu will appear. At the bottom of this menu, click on Guest.
A brand new Chrome window will immediately open. It will say “You’re browsing as a Guest” on the screen, and the profile icon in the top right will change to a generic avatar labeled “Guest”.
You can now safely hand the computer to your friend.
How to Exit Guest Mode
When your friend is finished using the computer, closing the session is incredibly easy.
- Click the Guest icon in the top-right corner of the browser.
- Click the Close Guest button.
The window will close, and every trace of their browsing activity will be wiped from your hard drive, leaving your personal Chrome profile exactly as you left it.
