How to Disable the Google Chrome Search Suggestion Dropdown

The Predictive Clutter Vector

As you begin typing a URL or a search query into the Google Chrome address bar (the Omnibox), the browser immediately contacts Google’s servers to fetch a list of predicted search terms and trending topics. This massive dropdown menu frequently obscures the actual webpage beneath it and can be highly distracting, especially if the algorithm suggests irrelevant or jarring topics. Furthermore, it continuously sends your partial keystrokes to Google before you have even pressed Enter.

How to Disable Search Suggestions

You can instruct Chrome to sever this real-time predictive connection, forcing the address bar to act strictly as a dumb input field that only searches your local history.

1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner to open the main menu.
3. Select Settings.
4. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on You and Google.
5. In the main pane, click on Sync and Google services.
6. Scroll down to the section titled Other Google services.
7. Locate the toggle switch labelled Autocomplete searches and URLs.
8. Click the toggle to switch it to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).

The change takes effect immediately. The next time you type into the Omnibox, Chrome will no longer attempt to guess what you are searching for, and it will no longer display trending internet topics in the dropdown menu.
