How to Disable Hardware Acceleration in Chrome to Fix Green Screen Videos

The Green Screen Glitch

Google Chrome utilizes a feature called hardware acceleration to offload demanding tasks, such as video playback and complex web animations, from your computer’s main processor (CPU) to its graphics card (GPU). While this generally improves performance and battery life, it can cause severe rendering issues if your graphics drivers are outdated, corrupted, or incompatible with Chrome’s rendering engine. One of the most common symptoms of this hardware acceleration failure is streaming video (like YouTube or Netflix) displaying as a solid green screen while the audio continues to play normally.

Disabling the Acceleration Flag

The most immediate and effective way to fix the green screen video glitch is to force Chrome to rely entirely on your CPU for video decoding by disabling hardware acceleration. Open Google Chrome, click the three-dot menu in the top right corner, and select Settings.

In the left-hand sidebar, click on System (you may need to click “Advanced” first depending on your Chrome version). Look for the toggle switch labeled Use hardware acceleration when available. Click the toggle to turn it off. A “Relaunch” button will immediately appear next to the setting. Click it to restart the browser. Once Chrome reopens, it will bypass your graphics card for video decoding, and the green screen issue will be resolved, allowing you to watch videos normally while you troubleshoot your graphics drivers.
