The Obsolete Download Bar
Historically, whenever you downloaded a file in Google Chrome, a thick grey bar (the “Download Shelf”) would appear at the very bottom of your browser window. It displayed the progress of your download and remained permanently fixed on your screen until you manually clicked the small ‘X’ on the far right side to dismiss it, effectively stealing a large chunk of your vertical screen real estate.
Recently, Google updated Chrome’s user interface to match other modern browsers by moving the download manager to a small, neat icon in the top-right toolbar next to your extensions. However, for some users running older versions of Chrome, or users who have accidentally enabled legacy flags, the intrusive bottom Download Shelf may still appear. You should disable it in favor of the new, cleaner top-bar UI.
How to Disable the Bottom Download Shelf
You can force Chrome to use the modern top-right download bubble by modifying the browser’s hidden experimental flags.
- Open Google Chrome.
- In the address bar at the top, type exactly:
chrome://flagsand press Enter. - You will see a warning page about experimental features. In the search box at the top of this page, type: download bubble
- Look for the flag titled Enable download bubble (and optionally Enable download bubble V2).
- Click the dropdown menu next to the flag and change it from Default or Disabled to Enabled.
- A large button will appear at the bottom of the screen prompting you to Relaunch the browser. Click it to restart Chrome.
By explicitly enabling the modern download bubble, the old legacy Download Shelf at the bottom of the screen will be completely disabled. All future downloads will neatly tuck themselves into the top right corner, saving your screen space.
