If you regularly use Google Chrome to research different projects, your Bookmarks Bar can quickly descend into chaos. If you have fifty individual websites sitting side-by-side underneath your address bar, you will eventually run out of horizontal space, forcing Chrome to hide your newest bookmarks inside an annoying drop-down overflow menu.
To keep your workspace organized and fast, you should group related websites into specific Bookmark Folders (e.g., “Recipes,” “Work Tools,” “Travel Research”). Instead of fifty icons cluttering your screen, you can have five neat folders.
How to Create a Bookmark Folder
You can create a new folder directly on the Bookmarks Bar in seconds.
- Ensure your Bookmarks Bar is visible. (If it is not, press
Ctrl + Shift + Bon Windows, orCmd + Shift + Bon Mac to reveal it). - Right-click on any empty space on the Bookmarks Bar.
- A drop-down menu will appear. Click on Add folder…
- A small pop-up window will appear. Type a short, descriptive name for your new folder (e.g., “Taxes 2024”).
- Click the blue Save button.
The new folder will instantly appear on your Bookmarks Bar, looking like a small, grey manila envelope.
How to Move Existing Bookmarks into a Folder
Once you have created the folder, organizing your existing links is incredibly intuitive.
- The Drag-and-Drop Method: Simply click and hold an existing bookmark icon on your bar, drag it directly over the top of the new folder, and release the mouse button. The bookmark will instantly drop inside.
- Saving a New Website directly to a Folder: When you are on a brand new website that you want to save, click the Star icon in the right side of the address bar. In the small pop-up menu that appears, look at the Folder drop-down box. Click it, and select your newly created folder from the list before clicking “Done”.
How to Open All Links in a Folder Simultaneously
One of the most powerful features of Bookmark Folders is the ability to launch an entire workflow with a single click.
If you have a folder called “Morning Routine” that contains your email, your calendar, and your favourite news website, you do not need to click them individually.
- Right-click on the folder itself.
- Select Open all.
Chrome will instantly launch all three websites in three separate tabs simultaneously, allowing you to start your day instantly.
