The Resource-Heavy Scan
Google Chrome includes a built-in security feature called the Software Reporter Tool (an executable named `software_reporter_tool.exe` on Windows). This tool runs periodically in the background to scan your computer for malware, conflicting software, or malicious extensions that might be interfering with Chrome’s performance. While designed to keep your browsing experience safe, the Software Reporter Tool is notorious for consuming massive amounts of CPU and disk I/O when it decides to run. If you are gaming, compiling code, or running heavy applications, Chrome’s sudden background scan can cause your entire system to stutter, lag, and overheat.
Disabling the Reporter Tool
To reclaim your system resources and stop Google Chrome from automatically running the Software Reporter Tool in the background, you must modify the permissions of the folder where the executable lives.
Because Chrome will simply redownload the tool if you delete it, you must block the system from accessing it. On Windows, press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialogue. Paste this exact path and press Enter: %localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data\SwReporter. You will see a folder with a version number (e.g., 104.283.200). Right-click that version folder and select Properties. Go to the Security tab and click the Advanced button at the bottom. In the Advanced Security Settings window, click the button that says Disable inheritance. A prompt will appear; choose Remove all inherited permissions from this object. The permissions list should now be completely blank. Click Apply, then click Yes on the Windows Security warning, and click OK to close everything. Chrome is now physically blocked from executing the scanner.
