The Accidental Purge
Google Chrome features “Pinned Tabs”—small, icon-only tabs anchored to the far left of your tab bar. Pinned tabs are designed for essential, always-open web applications like Gmail or Slack. To protect them, Chrome removes the “X” (close) button from the tab itself. However, Chrome still allows you to close pinned tabs via keyboard shortcuts (like Ctrl+W) or by middle-clicking them with a mouse wheel. If you are rapidly closing standard tabs using shortcuts and accidentally overshoot, you can easily and automatically close a pinned tab without Chrome ever displaying a warning or confirmation prompt, instantly terminating your critical background app.
Protecting Pinned Tabs from Shortcuts
Unfortunately, Google Chrome does not have a native “Lock Pinned Tabs” feature to prevent closure via shortcuts. To stop Google Chrome from automatically closing pinned tabs when you accidentally trigger a close command, you must utilize a specialized extension.
Because the behavior is hardcoded into Chrome’s shortcut engine, you need a third-party tool to intercept the command. Open the Chrome Web Store and search for an extension named LockTab or Keep Pinned Tabs. Install the extension. These utilities work by injecting a small script into your pinned tabs. When you press Ctrl+W or middle-click the tab, the extension intercepts the “close” command and forces a Javascript “BeforeUnload” dialogue box to appear on the screen. It will say something like, “Are you sure you want to leave this page?” This simple popup acts as a mandatory confirmation prompt, effectively stopping the automatic closure and allowing you to click “Cancel” to save your pinned tab from accidental deletion.
