How to Disable the Privacy Sandbox Completely in Google Chrome

The Ad Tracking Evolution

Google Chrome is transitioning away from traditional third-party cookies (which track you across the internet) to a new system called the “Privacy Sandbox.” This includes features like “Ad Topics.” Instead of a website tracking you, Chrome itself constantly analyzes your browsing history locally. It calculates what your interests are (e.g., “Fitness” or “Automobiles”) and then directly tells websites what categories you fall into so they can serve you targeted ads. While Google claims this is more private than cookies, many users are deeply uncomfortable with the browser itself acting as an active profiling engine that categorizes their behavior and reports it to advertisers.

Opting Out of Browser Profiling

To prevent Chrome from analyzing your history and disable the Privacy Sandbox completely, you must explicitly opt out of the ad privacy features within the browser settings.

Open Google Chrome. Click the three vertical dots (the customize menu) in the extreme top-right corner of the window and select Settings. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Privacy and security. On the main page, click on the section explicitly labelled Ad privacy. You will see three distinct categories: “Ad topics,” “Site-suggested ads,” and “Ad measurement.” You must click into each one individually. Click on Ad topics and flip the master toggle switch to Off. Click the back arrow, click into Site-suggested ads, and turn it Off. Finally, click into Ad measurement and turn it Off. Chrome will immediately stop calculating your interests and will no longer share any profiling data with the websites you visit.
