How to Check Your Word and Character Count in Google Docs

Whether you are writing an academic essay with a strict 2,000-word minimum or drafting a social media post that cannot exceed a specific character limit, actively monitoring the length of your document is critical. Unlike older versions of Microsoft Word that constantly displayed this metric in the bottom status bar, Google Docs keeps its interface completely minimal and hides this data by default. However, it takes only two clicks to access a detailed breakdown of your document’s length, including word count, character count, and the number of pages.

How to Check the Total Document Word Count

To view the total statistics for your entire document, you can access the built-in counter tool from the top menu.

  1. Open your Google Doc in your web browser.
  2. In the top navigation menu, click on Tools.
  3. From the dropdown menu, select Word count. (Alternatively, you can press Ctrl + Shift + C on a Windows PC or Cmd + Shift + C on a Mac).
  4. A small dialog box will appear in the center of your screen displaying four specific metrics:
    • Pages: The total number of printed pages.
    • Words: The total number of words in the document.
    • Characters: The total number of letters, numbers, and punctuation marks (including spaces).
    • Characters (excluding spaces): The total number of letters, numbers, and punctuation marks, but completely ignoring blank spaces.

Click OK to close the dialog box when you are finished.

How to Check the Word Count of a Specific Paragraph

Often, you do not care about the entire document; you just need to know if a specific paragraph or highlighted quote is too long. The Google Docs word count tool is dynamic and will adjust its calculations based on your selection.

  1. Using your mouse, click and drag to highlight the specific sentence or paragraph you want to measure. The text will turn blue.
  2. Press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + C (or navigate to Tools > Word count).
  3. The dialog box will now display the data as a fraction. For example, under Words, it might say “45 of 800,” meaning your highlighted selection is 45 words long, out of an 800-word total document.

How to Keep the Word Count Permanently Visible

If you are actively writing toward a deadline and need to monitor your progress in real-time, opening that dialog box every five minutes is frustrating. You can pin the word counter to your screen permanently.

  1. Open the Word count dialog box (Tools > Word count).
  2. Look at the very bottom of the dialog box and check the box labeled Display word count while typing.
  3. Click OK.

A small, floating box will immediately appear in the absolute bottom-left corner of your browser window. As you type, the number inside that box will update live, allowing you to track your exact word count without ever breaking your concentration.
