If you use Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) for your business or school, you may have noticed a frustrating default behavior in Google Calendar. Whenever you create a new calendar event and invite at least one other person, Google automatically generates a Google Meet video conferencing link and attaches it to the invitation.
While this is convenient for remote teams who rely exclusively on Google Meet, it causes massive confusion if your organization primarily uses Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Webex. Guests might click the Google Meet link out of habit, leaving you sitting alone in your Zoom room wondering where everyone is.
Fortunately, you can turn off this automatic link generation. However, the method depends on whether you are an individual user or a Google Workspace administrator.
How to Stop Google Meet Links (For Individual Users)
If you are an individual user on a standard Google account or an organization that permits personal overrides, you can change this in your own settings:
- Open Google Calendar in your web browser.
- Click the Settings gear icon in the top right corner and select Settings.
- In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Event settings.
- Look for the checkbox labeled Automatically add Google Meet video conferences to events I create.
- Uncheck the box.
Your settings save automatically. From now on, your events will not include a video link unless you manually click the “Add Google Meet video conferencing” button.
How to Stop Google Meet Links (For Workspace Admins)
If the checkbox above is greyed out or missing, it means your organization’s Google Workspace administrator has locked the setting globally. If you are the administrator, here is how you fix it for everyone:
- Log into the Google Workspace Admin console (admin.google.com).
- Navigate to Apps > Google Workspace > Calendar.
- Click on Sharing settings.
- Look for the Video Calls section.
- Uncheck the box that says Automatically add video calls to events created by a user.
- Click Save at the bottom of the screen.
It can take up to 24 hours for this change to propagate to all users in your organization, after which Google Meet links will no longer generate automatically.
