How to Blur Your Background and Use Visual Effects in Google Meet

Whether you are joining a client conference from a busy home office or attending a morning standup from a café, maintaining privacy during video calls is essential. Google Meet includes robust native visual effects that allow you to blur your physical surroundings, apply simulated professional office environments, or upload personalised company backgrounds.

Because Google Meet processes background separation directly inside modern web browsers using WebGL and client-side machine learning, you do not need third-party virtual camera extensions or green screens. You can configure your visual environment in the pre-call waiting room before anyone sees your video feed, or adjust effects dynamically mid-call.

This guide explains how to apply background blurs, choose virtual wallpapers, upload custom images, and troubleshoot hardware acceleration issues in Google Meet.

Method 1: Configure Visual Effects Before Joining a Meeting

Adjusting your background before clicking “Join now” guarantees that colleagues never catch a glimpse of an untidy room or personal space.

  1. Open your meeting link or launch Google Meet in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Firefox.
  2. In the Ready to join? self-view preview window, click the Apply visual effects icon located in the bottom-right corner of your video tile (represented by a silhouette surrounded by sparkle stars).
  3. A sidebar pane titled Effects will open on the right:
    • Slight Blur: Tap the first blur icon (a person with a lightly blurred outline) to softly soften background objects while keeping your edges natural.
    • Full Blur: Tap the second blur icon (a person with a dense blurred field) to obscure everything behind you completely.
    • Preset Wallpapers: Scroll down to browse pre-installed backdrops, including clean modern offices, academic libraries, cafés, and animated outdoor landscapes.
  4. To upload a company logo or custom photograph, click the + (Add your own background) button in the upper-left of the backgrounds grid, choose an image file (JPG or PNG) from your local drive, and confirm.
  5. Once your preview appears satisfactory, click Join now.

Method 2: Change or Blur Your Background During an Active Call

If unexpected interruptions or lighting shifts occur while a meeting is underway, you can adjust your background immediately without disconnecting.

  1. Move your cursor to reveal the meeting control bar at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Click the More options button (represented by three vertical dots).
  3. Select Apply visual effects from the popup menu.
  4. Click your desired effect:
    • Click No effect (the circle with a diagonal slash) to disable all modifications and revert to raw camera capture.
    • Switch between slight blur, full blur, or custom image backdrops as required.
  5. Click the X in the top-right corner of the Effects panel to dismiss the sidebar and return to the call interface.

Enabling Visual Effects on Mobile (Android & iOS)

You can also blur backgrounds when joining Google Meet calls from your smartphone or tablet:

  1. Launch the Google Meet app and enter a meeting.
  2. Before joining (or during the call), tap the Effects icon on your video preview tile.
  3. Under the Backgrounds tab at the bottom, select Blur your background or choose from the horizontal carousel of stock wallpapers.
  4. Tap the close icon to lock in your selection.

Optimising Performance: Blur vs Video Backdrops

Rendering machine learning segmentation models in real time consumes processor and GPU cycles. If you notice your laptop fan spinning loudly or your audio stuttering during presentations, consider the performance differences outlined below:

Effect Type Resource Impact Edge Fidelity Best Use Case
Slight Background Blur Lowest CPU & Battery Consumption Very clean around hair and spectacles Low-power laptops, battery power, professional client calls.
Full Background Blur Moderate Resource Overhead Good isolation; occasional edge clipping Crowded coffee shops, shared workspaces, high confidentiality.
Static Image Wallpaper Moderate Resource Overhead Sharp replacement; depends on camera contrast Branded webinars, company meetings, formal presentations.
Animated 360° Video Highest CPU & GPU Consumption Can introduce video frame drops on older hardware Casual team catchups, high-end desktop workstations.

Troubleshooting Missing or Greyed-Out Visual Effects

The “Apply Visual Effects” Button Is Completely Missing

If you do not see the sparkle icon anywhere in Google Meet, your web browser may have hardware acceleration disabled. Google Meet requires WebGL to run its image segmentation engine.

  1. In Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, click the Three dots menu > Settings.
  2. Select System from the left-hand navigation.
  3. Ensure Use graphics acceleration when available is toggled ON.
  4. Restart your browser and re-enter Google Meet.

Workspace Administrator Restrictions

If you are signed in with an enterprise or education Google Workspace account, your organisation’s administrator may have disabled background customisation via the Google Admin console to comply with institutional compliance policies. Contact your IT administrator if the option remains inaccessible across multiple browsers.
