How to Block Ads in Google Chrome

Modern websites are frequently overwhelmed with aggressive advertising. From massive banner images that push the actual article down the page, to video players that automatically scream audio at you, to pop-ups that obscure the entire screen, browsing the web without protection can be a frustrating and chaotic experience.

Google Chrome does not have a comprehensive, built-in ad blocker. (It blocks some historically malicious pop-ups, but it intentionally allows standard ads because Google is an advertising company). To clean up your browsing experience, speed up page load times, and protect yourself from malicious tracking scripts, you must install a third-party extension.

Step 1: Choose a Reputable Ad Blocker

Do not simply search Google for “Ad Blocker” and download the first result. Many malicious extensions disguise themselves as ad blockers but actually inject malware into your browser. You should only use open-source, highly trusted extensions downloaded directly from the official Chrome Web Store.

The undisputed industry standard is uBlock Origin (created by Raymond Hill). It is completely free, incredibly lightweight (meaning it won’t slow down your computer), and highly effective.

Step 2: Install the Extension from the Chrome Web Store

  1. Open the Google Chrome browser on your computer.
  2. Navigate to the official store: chrome.google.com/webstore
  3. In the search bar on the left side of the screen, type uBlock Origin and press Enter.
  4. Click on the result for “uBlock Origin” (Ensure the developer listed is Raymond Hill to avoid copycats).
  5. Click the blue button labeled Add to Chrome.
  6. A security pop-up will appear warning you that the extension can read your data. This is normal; an ad blocker must “read” the website data to identify and delete the ads before they reach your screen. Click Add extension.

Within seconds, a small icon (a red shield with a ‘uo’ inside) will appear in the top right corner of your Chrome browser, next to your profile picture.

Step 3: How to Use and Manage the Ad Blocker

The beauty of uBlock Origin is that it works perfectly right out of the box. You do not need to configure anything. Navigate to a heavy news website or YouTube, and you will instantly notice that the ads are gone, and the pages load much faster.

How to “Whitelist” a Website (Turn the blocker off)

Occasionally, you will visit a website (like a local news station or a banking portal) that utilizes aggressive anti-adblock scripts. The site might refuse to load a video, or present a massive banner saying, “Please disable your ad blocker to read this article.”

If you want to support a specific creator, or if the website is fundamentally broken, you can turn the blocker off for that specific site only.

  1. Navigate to the website you want to whitelist (e.g., Forbes.com).
  2. Click the small puzzle piece icon in the top right corner of Chrome to open the Extensions menu.
  3. Click the pin icon next to uBlock Origin to pin it to your toolbar permanently.
  4. Click the uBlock Origin shield icon in the toolbar.
  5. A small dashboard will drop down. Click the massive blue Power Button icon.

The shield will turn grey, and the website will automatically refresh. Ads will now load normally on Forbes.com, but the ad blocker will remain active and protective on every other website you visit.

A Warning About Mobile Browsers

If you are using Google Chrome on an iPhone or an Android device, Chrome does not support extensions on mobile. You cannot install uBlock Origin or any other ad blocker into the mobile Chrome app.

If you want to block ads on your smartphone, you must use a different browser entirely. Download the Brave Browser or Mozilla Firefox (which does support extensions on Android) from your phone’s App Store.
