Whenever you download a new game, utility, or productivity application from the Google Play Store onto an Android smartphone, the default launcher automatically creates a new shortcut icon on the next available space on your home screen. If you carefully curate minimalist wallpaper setups, organised application folders, or custom widget arrangements, newly installed icons constantly disrupt your layout.
Modern versions of Android (including Pixel Launcher, Samsung One UI, and Motorola launcher) allow you to disable this automated shortcut creation, ensuring new software remains neatly tucked away inside your app drawer until you choose to place it.
Disabling Automated Home Screen Shortcuts on Google Pixel and Stock Android
If you use a Google Pixel, Motorola, or device running standard stock Android:
- Touch and hold any empty area on your home screen until the configuration menu appears.
- Tap Home settings (gear icon).
- Locate the toggle switch labelled Add app icons to home screen (“For new apps”).
- Toggle the switch to the Off position.
Newly downloaded apps will now install cleanly into your alphabetical app drawer without generating unprompted home screen icons.
Disabling Automated Shortcuts on Samsung Galaxy Devices (One UI)
If you use a Samsung Galaxy smartphone or tablet:
- Pinch inwards on any home screen page or touch and hold an empty space.
- Tap Settings in the bottom-right corner.
- Locate the setting labelled Add new apps to Home screen.
- Toggle the switch to Off.
Manually Placing Apps When Desired
With automated shortcut creation disabled, you retain full manual control over your home screen presentation. Whenever you decide that a new application warrants a persistent home screen presence, simply swipe up to reveal your full app drawer, touch and hold the app icon, and drag it into your favoured position or folder.
