For years, managing fitness data across multiple Android applications was fragmented and frustrating. Tracking your daily runs with Strava, logging meals in MyFitnessPal, and recording sleep stages on a Samsung Galaxy Watch or Whoop strap meant having separate data silos that could not easily communicate. Google introduced Health Connect as a unified, on-device data platform built directly into Android 14 and Android 15. Health Connect acts as a secure central hub that lets compatible health and fitness apps share metrics with your explicit permission.
How Health Connect Works and Why It Enhances Privacy
Unlike third-party cloud aggregators that require uploading sensitive personal biometric metrics to remote servers, Health Connect is an on-device Android system service:
- Encrypted On-Device Storage: All biometric metrics (including blood pressure, heart rate variability, sleep cycles, and daily active steps) are encrypted locally on your phone hardware.
- Granular Read/Write Permissions: You decide exactly which metrics each app can view or publish. For instance, you can allow a running app to read your heart rate without granting it access to your sleep records.
- Zero Cloud Intermediaries: Data transfers happen directly between installed applications on the Android framework without routing through Google Cloud servers.
- Centralised Audit Log: A unified dashboard displays an access timeline showing precisely which application accessed your health data and at what time.
Accessing Health Connect in Android Settings
On devices running Android 14 or Android 15 (such as Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy with One UI 6+, and Motorola), Health Connect is integrated directly into the operating system settings:
- Open the Settings app on your Android handset.
- Tap Security & privacy (or Privacy on some builds).
- Select Privacy > Health Connect.
- Alternatively, search for Health Connect directly in the Settings search bar.
Connecting Fitness Apps and Granting Permissions
To link third-party fitness applications (such as Samsung Health, Google Fit, Withings, Peloton, or Strava) to Health Connect:
- Open the fitness app you wish to link (e.g., Samsung Health or Strava).
- Navigate to the app’s internal Settings menu.
- Look for an option labelled Health Connect, Connected Services, or Data Sharing.
- Toggle on the Health Connect integration. Android will display a system-level permissions sheet.
- Review the requested permissions categorized into Allowed to read and Allowed to write.
- Toggle individual permissions on or off based on your privacy preferences, or tap Allow all if you trust the application.
- Tap Done to finalize the connection.
Managing Data Permissions and Auditing Access
You retain full control over your stored metrics at all times:
- In Health Connect settings, tap App permissions to view all connected applications.
- Tap any application to revoke specific read or write permissions immediately.
- Tap Data and access to browse your recorded metrics by category (e.g., Activity, Body measurements, Sleep, Vitals).
- To purge recorded health metrics, tap Delete all data or choose a custom retention window (such as deleting records older than 30 days automatically).
