How to Enable and Use App Pinning on Android to Lock a Single App on Screen for Guest Access

Handing your smartphone to a friend to make a quick phone call, letting a child play a game, or showing a coworker a website often raises privacy anxieties. Without safeguards, a simple accidental swipe can expose private WhatsApp conversations, photos, banking applications, or browser histories. Android features a built-in privacy tool called App Pinning. This feature securely locks the active screen to one specific application, preventing navigation elsewhere until your lock screen PIN or biometrics are verified.

What Is App Pinning and How Does It Secure Your Device?

App Pinning disables system-wide navigation gestures, notification shades, and hardware power menus while active:

  • Locked Navigation: The guest user cannot swipe home, view the Recent Apps carousel, or switch to other applications.
  • Notification Shade Blocked: Swiping down from the top edge is disabled, preventing incoming message previews or private alert notifications from being seen.
  • Mandatory Authentication: Unpinning the screen immediately requires your fingerprint, face unlock, or device PIN before the rest of the phone becomes accessible.

Enabling App Pinning in Android Settings

App Pinning is supported on all modern Android builds (including Android 13, 14, and 15), but is disabled by default:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android handset.
  2. Scroll down and tap Security & privacy (or Security).
  3. Tap More security settings or Advanced.
  4. Locate App pinning (or Pin app) and tap on it.
  5. Toggle the switch to On.
  6. Ensure the option labelled Ask for PIN before unpinning is switched On to enforce security upon exit.

Pinning an Application to the Screen

Once enabled, pinning any application takes only two taps:

  1. Open the application you want to share with the guest (for example, the Phone app or YouTube Kids).
  2. Open the Recent Apps (Overview) screen by swiping up from the bottom of the display and holding (or tapping the square navigation button).
  3. Tap the application icon located at the top of the app preview window.
  4. Select Pin from the contextual menu.
  5. A system prompt confirms that the app is pinned. Tap Got it.

The application is now locked in place. Any attempt to swipe to the Home screen or open notifications will display a brief prompt stating that the screen is pinned.

Unpinning the App to Restore Full Device Access

When your friend or child returns the handset, unpin the application smoothly:

  1. If using Gesture Navigation: Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen and hold your finger down.
  2. If using 3-Button Navigation: Press and hold the Back and Overview (Recents) buttons simultaneously.
  3. The screen immediately locks. Place your finger on the biometric sensor or enter your lock screen PIN to resume normal smartphone operation.
