Modern Android smartphones feature expansive, vibrant displays that are fantastic for watching media, reading documents, and playing mobile games. However, larger screen sizes make reaching top navigation bars, notification drawers, and corner action buttons nearly impossible when holding the phone in a single hand. To solve this ergonomic challenge, Google integrated a native One-Handed mode into Android that temporarily lowers or condenses the active screen area within comfortable thumb’s reach.
Rather than relying on clunky third-party overlay apps, Android’s built-in One-Handed mode can be triggered instantly with a simple downward swipe near the bottom edge of the display or via an accessibility shortcut. You can also configure its behavioural action—choosing whether the entire screen slides downward or whether the gesture summons your notification shade instead. In this guide, you will learn how to enable One-Handed mode on your Android device, customise its triggering behaviour, assign shortcut icons, and optimize single-handed usability.
How One-Handed Mode Works on Android
Android’s native One-Handed mode provides a system-level transformation that dynamically shifts the upper half of your user interface down to the lower half of the screen:
- Reachable Upper UI: Web browser address bars, app header menus, search boxes, and top-corner settings buttons shift down directly within natural thumb reach.
- Dual Action Modes: Choose between pulling down the entire application screen or using the gesture as an instant shortcut to pull down notifications and Quick Settings tiles.
- Smart Auto-Exit: Android automatically exits One-Handed mode when you tap anywhere in the empty upper screen area, switch applications, or rotate your device to landscape mode.
- Configurable Timeout: The screen stays condensed while actively interacting with it, returning to full screen after a brief interval of inactivity.
Step 1: Enable One-Handed Mode in Android Settings
Activating One-Handed mode takes only a moment in the system gesture preferences:
- Open the Settings app on your Android device (Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, Motorola, or stock Android).
- Scroll down and tap System (on Samsung Galaxy devices, navigate to Advanced features > One-handed mode).
- Select Gestures.
- Tap One-handed mode.
- Toggle the switch labelled Use one-handed mode to the On position.
Step 2: Customise the Triggering Action
Once enabled, you can choose how the gesture behaves according to your daily usage habits:
- Pull screen into reach: Slides the top half of the active application down toward the centre of the display. This is the recommended mode for browsing websites, managing emails, and interacting with social media apps.
- Show notifications: Repurposes the downward bottom gesture to expand your Notification shade and Quick Settings drawer without having to stretch your finger to the very top edge of the device.
Select your preferred option by tapping the corresponding radio button in the settings menu.
Step 3: Trigger and Exit One-Handed Mode
Once configured, using One-Handed mode becomes second nature:
Using Gesture Navigation
Swipe downward on the very bottom edge of your screen, near the horizontal gesture navigation bar. The entire interface immediately shifts down to the lower half of your display, leaving a dark or patterned space above it.
Exiting One-Handed Mode
To return to full screen, use any of these quick actions:
- Tap anywhere in the empty upper area above the condensed screen.
- Swipe upward from the bottom edge of the screen.
- Press your device’s physical Power button to lock the screen.
Step 4: Enable the One-Handed Mode Accessibility Shortcut
If you use traditional 3-button navigation (Back, Home, Overview) or find the swipe-down gesture difficult to execute consistently, enable an on-screen accessibility button:
- In the One-handed mode settings screen, scroll down to the bottom.
- Toggle on One-handed mode shortcut.
- A small floating accessibility icon will appear along the side margin of your display.
- Tap this virtual button at any time to instantly trigger or exit One-Handed mode. You can drag the icon to any screen edge so it remains unobtrusive.
Step 5: Adjust One-Handed Keyboard Settings
For complete single-handed comfort, combine One-Handed mode with Gboard’s one-handed keyboard layout:
- Open any messaging app and tap a text field to bring up Gboard.
- Tap the four-square menu icon or the gear settings icon on the keyboard toolbar.
- Select One-handed mode.
- The keyboard compresses and docks to the left or right side of the screen.
- Tap the arrow icon to swap sides between left-handed and right-handed typing, or tap the expand icon to restore full-width keyboard layout.
