Endurance athletes competing in triathlons, duathlons, and swim-run events require continuous telemetry across drastically different athletic disciplines. Manually ending an outdoor swim workout, unlocking the screen, and scrolling through menus to launch an outdoor cycling workout wastes crucial transition seconds and risks accidental water touches. To empower multi-discipline athletes, Apple introduced native Multisport workouts directly into the watchOS Workout app.
Featuring intelligent Autodetect Transitions, an Apple Watch can automatically identify when you exit open water and mount your bicycle, or when you rack your bike and begin running. It splits your performance into discrete athletic legs and transition periods (T1 and T2) while continuously tracking heart rate zones, power, pace, and split times. In this tutorial, you will learn how to configure, customize, and execute Multisport triathlon workouts on Apple Watch.
What Is the Multisport Workout on Apple Watch?
The native Multisport workout profile offers distinct advantages for endurance racers:
- Automatic Transitions: Leverages motion sensors and GPS signatures to recognize the moment you switch from swimming to transition 1 (T1), cycling to transition 2 (T2), and running to the finish line.
- Manual Transition Control: Allows racers to manually advance to the next sport leg by pressing the Action button (on Apple Watch Ultra) or swiping right and tapping Transition.
- Leg-Specific Metric Views: Dynamically adjusts displayed data fields depending on the active discipline (e.g. Stroke Rate in swim, Cycling Power in bike, Ground Contact Time in run).
- Comprehensive Post-Race Analytics: Summarises total time, segment splits, transition duration, elevation changes, and calorie burn inside the Apple Fitness app on iPhone.
Step 1: Selecting the Standard Triathlon Profile
Apple Watch comes pre-configured with a standard Triathlon workout structure (Open Water Swim, Outdoor Cycle, and Outdoor Run):
- Press the Digital Crown and open the Workout app on your Apple Watch.
- Scroll through the workout catalog until you locate Multisport.
- By default, the card displays Triathlon (Swim / Bike / Run).
- Tap the More button (•••) in the top-right corner of the Multisport tile to inspect workout preferences.
- Verify that Autodetect Transitions is enabled if you prefer hands-free switching, or toggle it off if you plan to mark transitions manually using the physical buttons.
Step 2: Creating a Custom Multisport Workout (Duathlons & Custom Events)
If you are competing in a duathlon (Run / Bike / Run) or a customized training session, you can construct a personalized activity sequence:
- In the Workout app, scroll to Multisport and tap the More button (•••).
- Scroll down and tap Create Workout.
- Tap Custom.
- Tap Add Leg to select your initial activity (for example, Outdoor Run).
- Tap Add Leg again and select your second activity (such as Outdoor Cycle).
- Add a third leg (such as another Outdoor Run).
- Give your custom workout a descriptive title (such as Sprint Duathlon) and tap Done.
Step 3: Customising Metric Views for Each Athletic Leg
Each athletic leg in a Multisport session can present unique Workout Views tuned to that specific sport:
- In the Multisport settings sheet, tap the Edit button (pencil icon) next to your chosen triathlon workout.
- Tap Workout Views.
- Scroll to the sport you wish to tailor (e.g. Outdoor Cycle) and tap Edit Views.
- Toggle on key data fields:
- For Cycling: Add Cycling Power (Watts), Cadence (RPM), and Speed.
- For Running: Add Running Power, Stride Length, Vertical Oscillation, and Heart Rate Zones.
- For Swimming: Add Average Pace per 100m, Lap Distance, and Heart Rate.
Step 4: Executing a Triathlon on Race Day
When standing at the race start line, initiate tracking smoothly:
- Open Workout, tap the Multisport Triathlon card, and wait for the 3-second countdown (Water Lock engages automatically for swim legs).
- During Swim Leg: Swim your course. When you emerge onto the beach or transition zone, Apple Watch detects the change and switches tracking to Transition 1 (T1).
- Manual Transition Override: If you wear an Apple Watch Ultra, you can instantly advance to the next sport or transition by pressing the orange Action Button. On standard Apple Watch models, press and hold the Digital Crown to unlock Water Lock, swipe right, and tap Transition.
- During Bike & Run Legs: The watch presents your tailored cycling and running dashboards automatically as you switch disciplines.
- Finishing the Race: At the finish line, swipe right and tap End (or press the side button and Digital Crown simultaneously to pause, then end).
Reviewing Transition Times in the Fitness App on iPhone
After your race synchronises with your paired iPhone:
- Open the Fitness app on iPhone.
- Under History, tap your completed Multisport session.
- The summary displays your total elapsed event time alongside dedicated expandable cards for Swim, T1 (Transition 1), Bike, T2 (Transition 2), and Run.
- Expand each transition to review exact split seconds and heart rate patterns during gear changes.
