How to Invert Display Colours on Apple Watch for Better Visibility

The standard watchOS user interface features deep black backgrounds designed to blend seamlessly with the OLED display borders and maximise battery efficiency. While sleek and energy-efficient, white text against dark backgrounds can prove challenging to read for individuals with certain visual impairments, astigmatism, or photophobia, as well as users exercising in harsh midday sunlight glare.

Apple includes a dedicated accessibility feature called Invert Colours in watchOS that reverses screen hues across menus, alerts, and system applications, transforming black backgrounds into bright high-contrast white canvases with sharp black lettering.

Enabling Invert Colours Directly on Apple Watch

To toggle colour inversion directly from your wrist:

  1. Press the Digital Crown to view your installed applications, then tap the Settings app (gear icon).
  2. Scroll down and tap Accessibility.
  3. Under the Vision heading, scroll down and tap Invert Colours.
  4. Toggle the switch next to Invert Colours to the On position.

The watch display will immediately invert, rendering light backgrounds and dark text across all system navigation lists and notification sheets.

Enabling Invert Colours from Your Paired iPhone

Alternatively, configure the feature using the larger screen of your iPhone:

  1. Open the Watch app on your paired iPhone.
  2. Tap the My Watch tab in the bottom-left corner.
  3. Tap Accessibility.
  4. Scroll down to the Vision section and toggle Invert Colours on.

Assigning Invert Colours to the Accessibility Shortcut

If you only need inverted colours temporarily when stepping outside into intense sunlight, assign it to a physical button shortcut:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility on your Apple Watch.
  2. Scroll to the very bottom and tap Accessibility Shortcut.
  3. Select Invert Colours to place a tick next to it.

You can now triple-click the Digital Crown at any moment to instantly toggle Invert Colours on or off without navigating through settings menus.
