Whether traveling on long-haul flights, embarking on day-long hikes, or simply forgetting to place your smartwatch on its magnetic charger before bed, battery anxiety on Apple Watch can be frustrating. To address this, Apple introduced a system-wide Low Power Mode starting in watchOS 9, replacing the restrictive legacy “Power Reserve” feature that previously turned off everything except a dim digital clock display. Low Power Mode keeps your watch fully usable for timekeeping, activity tracking, and emergency features while intelligently suspending non-essential background processes.
Understanding which features remain active and how to enable Low Power Mode manually or automatically during outdoor workouts dramatically extends your watch runtime without compromising essential safety functions.
What Remains Active and What Gets Restricted?
Low Power Mode selectively throttles internal hardware components and network requests to conserve milliwatts while keeping core watch experiences responsive:
- Turned Off Completely: The Always-On display is disabled (the screen stays dark until you tap it or raise your wrist), background heart rate measurements are halted, irregular heart rhythm notifications are paused, and blood oxygen readings are suspended.
- Postponed or Throttled: Incoming notifications may arrive delayed if your iPhone is not nearby (the watch batches Wi-Fi connections hourly), background app refreshes are paused, and Siri queries may take a second longer to process.
- Fully Preserved: You can still make and receive emergency phone calls, Fall Detection and Crash Detection remain operational, activity rings continue calculating active calories and steps, and music playback over Bluetooth operates normally.
Enabling Low Power Mode via Control Centre
You can engage Low Power Mode at any time directly from the watch face:
- Press the Side button once (on watchOS 10 and 11) to summon the Control Centre. On watchOS 9 or earlier, swipe up from the bottom of your watch face.
- Tap the Battery percentage tile.
- Beneath the current charge level, toggle on Low Power Mode.
- A detailed briefing screen appears outlining feature restrictions. Scroll to the bottom and choose your duration:
- Turn On: Keeps Low Power Mode active indefinitely until you manually disable it or recharge your watch to 80%.
- Turn On For…: Allows you to schedule the mode for 1 Day, 2 Days, or 3 Days, ideal for weekend camping trips.
- Once engaged, a distinctive yellow circle icon appears at the top of your watch face, and your battery percentage indicator switches from green to yellow.
Automatically Enabling Low Power Mode During Workouts
If you record multi-hour marathon sessions, cycling rides, or long distance walks, the workout sensor array consumes substantial energy. You can configure Apple Watch to automatically engage Low Power Mode only while a workout is being tracked:
- Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch.
- Scroll down and tap Workout.
- Toggle on Low Power Mode.
- Whenever you begin any workout in the native Workout app, Low Power Mode activates automatically, preserving battery life while still capturing your route GPS, elapsed time, and heart rate metrics.
How Low Power Mode Disengages Automatically
You do not need to worry about manually disabling Low Power Mode once you return to power. Whenever you connect your Apple Watch to its charger and the internal battery reaches 80% capacity, watchOS automatically switches off Low Power Mode, restoring Always-On display, continuous background heart rate sampling, and immediate notification polling seamlessly.
