How to Eject Water from Your Apple Watch Speaker After Swimming or Showering

Modern Apple Watch models—from the Apple Watch Series 2 all the way through the Apple Watch Ultra series and Apple Watch SE—feature high water resistance ratings that make them ideal companions for lap swimming, ocean workouts, water sports, and daily showers. While the internal electronics are hermetically sealed against moisture ingress, the acoustic speaker cavity requires an open physical pathway to the outside world to project sound. Following a swim or shower, surface tension causes water droplets to lodge inside this speaker opening, leaving Siri responses, phone calls, and notification chimes sounding muffled, faint, or distorted.

How the Apple Watch Water Lock and Acoustic Ejection System Works

Apple engineered an ingenious physical solution to clear trapped liquid called Water Lock. Water Lock performs two complementary safety functions:

  • Display Input Disabling: Water is an electrical conductor that mimics human touch. When submerged, water droplets touching your screen can trigger accidental taps, open random apps, or accidentally pause workout tracking. Water Lock locks the capacitive touch sensor so the screen does not respond to moisture.
  • Acoustic Vibration Ejection: When you turn off Water Lock, the Apple Watch speaker driver plays a series of low-frequency, pulsating acoustic tones. These specific sound vibrations generate mechanical air pressure within the speaker chamber, physically pumping and expelling trapped water droplets outward through the speaker grill.

How to Manually Turn On Water Lock Before Getting Wet

While starting a swimming workout in the Workout app turns on Water Lock automatically, you can also activate it manually before washing dishes or stepping into the shower:

  1. Press the Side Button on your Apple Watch to open the watchOS Control Centre. (On watchOS 9 and earlier, swipe up from the bottom of your watch face).
  2. Scroll through the Control Centre tiles and locate the Water Lock icon (represented by a water droplet).
  3. Tap the Water Droplet icon.
  4. A small cyan water droplet icon will appear at the top-centre of your watch face, confirming that touch inputs are now safely locked.

Steps to Eject Trapped Water After Exiting the Water

Once you finish swimming or bathing and dry your arms, initiate the water ejection sequence:

  1. Press and hold the physical Digital Crown located on the upper-right edge of your Apple Watch casing. (On older watchOS versions, turn the Digital Crown continuously until the circle fills).
  2. The display screen will show an animated graphic reading “Unlocking”.
  3. A sequence of rapid, low-pitched beeps and pulses will sound from the speaker port. You may feel gentle haptic vibrations against your wrist.
  4. A fine mist or small droplet of moisture will visibly emerge from the dual speaker slits on the left side of the watch case.
  5. Once complete, a chime sounds, the display announces “Unlocked”, and normal capacitive touch functionality returns immediately.

What to Do If Sound Remains Muffled After Ejection

If notification chimes still sound quiet or scratchy after running the water ejection sequence once, a tiny drop of moisture may still be clinging to the acoustic membrane:

  • Repeat the Ejection Cycle: Open the Control Centre, tap the Water Droplet icon to lock the screen, and hold the Digital Crown again to run a second cycle of acoustic vibrations.
  • Gentle Shake: Hold the Apple Watch firmly with the speaker vents facing downward toward a soft towel and gently shake your wrist to encourage stubborn droplets to release.
  • Avoid Heat and Compressed Air: Never insert needles, toothpicks, or paperclips into the speaker slits, and never use hair dryers or compressed air cans. High pressure or excessive heat will rupture the delicate waterproof seals and void your warranty.
  • Allow Natural Evaporation: Simply wear your watch or place it on a clean towel; any residual microscopic moisture will naturally evaporate within one to two hours without harming the speaker components.

Using the Water Lock ejection routine after aquatic activities ensures that your Apple Watch speaker maintains clear, crisp acoustics and stays in pristine working condition for years to come.
