The Intrusive Hygiene Coach
Apple introduced a “Handwashing” feature to the Apple Watch designed to encourage better hygiene. When the watch detects the specific motion of your hands rubbing together, combined with the audio signature of running water, it automatically launches a 20-second countdown timer on the screen. Additionally, it can use your location data to send a notification reminding you to wash your hands the moment you walk through your front door. While well-intentioned, the audio detection is often flawed. If you are washing dishes, peeling potatoes under the tap, or simply scrubbing a stain out of a shirt, the watch will constantly vibrate, assuming you are washing your hands. If you find this feature annoying or inaccurate, you can turn it off.
How to Turn Off Handwashing Timers and Reminders
You can completely disable both the automatic detection and the location-based reminders directly from your wrist.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list of apps until you find Handwashing. Tap it.
- You will see two distinct toggle switches:
- Toggle Handwashing Timer to the Off position (this stops the watch from listening for running water).
- Toggle Handwashing Reminders to the Off position (this stops the location-based alerts when returning home).
A Quieter Wrist
The changes take effect instantly. Your Apple Watch will immediately stop activating its microphone when it suspects you are near a sink. You can now wash your dishes or clean your kitchen without your wrist constantly buzzing and commanding you to scrub for 20 seconds, saving a small amount of battery life in the process.
