How to Disable Siri Dictation on Apple Watch

The Privacy Concern

The Apple Watch features an incredibly small keyboard, making typing messages frustrating. To solve this, Apple pushes users heavily toward “Siri Dictation.” When you tap the microphone icon in the Messages app, you can speak your message out loud, and the watch will instantly convert your voice into text. While highly convenient, this process is not always handled locally. To improve accuracy, the watch frequently packages up the audio recording of your voice and transmits it directly to Apple’s cloud servers for processing. If you demand absolute privacy and refuse to allow your smartwatch to upload audio recordings of your voice to the internet, you must disable the dictation engine.

How to Turn Off Siri Dictation

You can permanently sever the microphone’s connection to the transcription servers via the General settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on General.
  3. Scroll down and tap on Dictation.
  4. Look for the master toggle switch labeled Dictation.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Text Only

The change is absolute and instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely disable the voice-to-text transcription engine. The microphone icon will immediately vanish from the Messages app and the Mail app. To communicate from your wrist, you must now rely entirely on the digital keyboard, pre-written quick replies, or scribbling letters on the screen with your finger, guaranteeing that audio recordings of your voice are never uploaded to the cloud.
