How to Disable Siri Crown Activation on Apple Watch

The Physical Trigger

The Apple Watch offers multiple ways to activate its voice assistant. In addition to saying the wake word or raising your wrist, Apple hard-coded a physical shortcut: pressing and holding the Digital Crown. If you hold the crown down for exactly one second, the watch vibrates violently and the Siri listening interface immediately takes over the screen. Unfortunately, if you wear your watch tight against your hand and frequently bend your wrist backward (such as when doing push-ups or riding a bicycle), the back of your hand will constantly smash against the crown, triggering Siri by accident. You must disable this hardware shortcut.

How to Turn Off Siri Crown Activation

You can permanently sever the connection between the physical button press and the voice assistant via the Siri settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Siri.
  3. Under the “Ask Siri” section, locate the master toggle switch labeled Press Digital Crown.
  4. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

A Dedicated Home Button

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely reprogram the Digital Crown’s micro-controller. You can now press and hold the crown against your hand for as long as you want during a workout, and the watch will completely ignore the sustained input. The crown will now strictly function as a simple home button (single press) and scrolling dial, never again launching the voice assistant.
