VoiceOver is a phenomenal accessibility feature built into iOS designed for users with severe visual impairments. When active, it fundamentally changes how the iPhone operates. Instead of tapping an icon to open an app, you tap it once to hear Siri read the app’s name aloud, and then you must double-tap the screen to actually open it. Furthermore, scrolling requires swiping with three fingers instead of one.
If you accidentally turn VoiceOver on (often by sitting on your phone or inadvertently triggering a shortcut), your iPhone will appear completely broken or unresponsive. A black box will highlight whatever you touch, and the phone will talk incessantly. Do not panic; your phone is not broken. You simply need to navigate through the altered controls to turn the feature off.
Method 1: The Fastest Way (Using Siri)
Because navigating the settings menu is incredibly frustrating while VoiceOver is active, the easiest and most reliable method is to simply ask Siri to turn it off for you. You don’t need to touch the screen at all.
- Activate Siri.
- On an iPhone with Face ID (no home button), press and hold the Side button (the power button) on the right edge of the phone.
- On an iPhone with a physical Home Button, press and hold the Home Button.
- Alternatively, simply say, “Hey Siri.”
- Once Siri is listening, clearly state: “Turn off VoiceOver.”
- Siri will respond, “Okay, VoiceOver is now off.”
Your screen will return to normal operation instantly.
Method 2: The Shortcut Way (Triple-Click)
Apple includes an “Accessibility Shortcut” tied to the physical buttons on the phone. If you accidentally triggered VoiceOver by mashing the buttons in your pocket, you can use the exact same method to turn it off.
- On an iPhone with Face ID: Triple-click the Side button (press it three times rapidly).
- On an iPhone with a Home Button: Triple-click the Home button.
If the shortcut is configured correctly, a small menu will pop up from the bottom of the screen, or the feature will simply turn off immediately with a voice announcing, “VoiceOver off.”
Method 3: The Hard Way (Navigating Settings with VoiceOver Active)
If Siri is disabled and the hardware shortcut is broken, you must manually navigate into the Settings app. Remember the golden rules of VoiceOver: Tap once to select (highlight), Double-tap to activate, and Swipe with three fingers to scroll.
- Go to your Home screen.
- Find the Settings app. Tap it once so the black box highlights it and the phone reads “Settings.”
- Double-tap anywhere on the screen to open the app.
- You need to scroll down. Place three fingers on the screen and swipe upward to scroll the menu.
- Find Accessibility. Tap it once to highlight it, then double-tap to open it.
- Find VoiceOver at the top of the list. Tap it once to highlight it, then double-tap to open it.
- You will see the main VoiceOver toggle switch is green. Tap the switch once to highlight it.
- Double-tap anywhere on the screen to flip the switch to OFF.
The black boxes will instantly vanish, the talking will cease, and your phone will respond to standard touch inputs again.
