How to Turn Off the Startup Sound (Chime) on a Mac

The Acoustic Boot Vector

Since the earliest days of Apple computers, Mac hardware has been programmed to emit a loud, resonant “chime” sound immediately upon receiving power. While originally engineered as a diagnostic signal indicating that the motherboard had successfully passed its initial hardware checks, the modern implementation is largely cosmetic. If you frequently need to boot or restart your Mac in quiet environments—such as a university library, a sleeping household, or a corporate meeting—this unavoidable acoustic blast is highly disruptive.

How to Turn Off the Startup Sound

Apple now provides a simple software toggle within the operating system to completely mute the hardware boot chime.

1. Click the Apple Logo in the extreme top-left corner of the screen.
2. Select System Settings from the dropdown menu.
3. In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Sound.
4. In the main Sound pane, look under the Output & Input section.
5. Locate the toggle switch labelled Play sound on startup.
6. Click the toggle to switch it to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).

The next time you shut down and power on your Mac, it will boot in complete silence. You can reverse this setting at any time if you prefer the audible confirmation.
