Whenever you download an application from the iOS App Store that bundles an optional Apple Watch companion app, watchOS is configured by default to install that watch app automatically in the background. While convenient for essential communication or fitness tools, this automatic deployment quickly clutters your Apple Watch home screen (especially in Grid View) and steadily consumes finite internal storage with apps you never intended to use on your wrist. Disabling this automated behavior ensures that only apps you explicitly authorize are installed on your watch.
Why Disable Automatic App Installation?
Restricting companion app installation provides multiple everyday advantages:
- Storage Preservation: Standard Apple Watch models offer limited onboard NAND storage (ranging from 32 GB on older models to 64 GB on recent Series and Ultra hardware). Preventing unnecessary companion app binaries leaves ample capacity for offline music playlists, podcasts, and watchOS software updates.
- Decluttered Interface: Eliminates dozens of unused application icons from your Apple Watch Grid View or List View, letting you access essential daily apps without endless scrolling.
- Battery Efficiency: Some companion apps register background app refresh tasks or complication update daemons that can subtly draw on your watch’s battery throughout the day.
Method 1: Turn Off Automatic App Install via the iPhone Watch App
The most straightforward method to halt automatic companion downloads is using the companion Watch app on your paired iPhone:
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
- Select the My Watch tab in the bottom-left corner.
- Under the initial settings section, locate and tap App Store (or on earlier iOS versions, scroll to the General menu).
- Locate the toggle switch labelled Automatic App Install.
- Switch the toggle Off.
From this point forward, installing an app on your iPhone will never trigger a corresponding installation on your Apple Watch automatically.
Method 2: Turn Off Automatic Downloads Directly on Apple Watch
You can also configure this rule natively on the watch itself without touching your iPhone:
- Press the Digital Crown on your Apple Watch to open the app launcher.
- Tap the Settings cog icon.
- Scroll down and tap App Store.
- Locate the Automatic Downloads toggle.
- Switch the toggle Off.
How to Manually Install or Remove Specific Watch Apps
Disabling automatic installation does not prevent you from using companion apps when you actually want them:
- Manually Install Companion Apps: Open the Watch app on your iPhone, go to My Watch, and scroll to the bottom to view the Available Apps section. Any iPhone app with an uninstalled watch companion will display an Install button. Tap it to deploy only the apps you need.
- Remove Existing Unwanted Apps: On your iPhone’s Watch app, scroll through the Installed on Apple Watch list, select the unwanted app, and turn off the Show App on Apple Watch toggle. Alternatively, on your Apple Watch, press and hold any app icon on the home screen until icons jiggle, tap the X badge on the app you wish to delete, and tap Delete App.
