How to View and Manage Saved Payment Cards in Safari on Mac

Safari on macOS incorporates an intelligent AutoFill mechanism that securely stores credit and debit card information. When shopping online, Safari automatically populates payment forms, saving you from entering 16-digit card numbers manually. Keeping your stored cards up to date ensures seamless checkouts while protecting expired or replaced cards from unauthorised use. All payment details are safeguarded by iCloud Keychain and require Touch ID or your macOS account password for access.

Accessing Saved Credit Cards in Safari Settings

Payment cards in Safari are managed through Safari’s preferences menu, independent of Apple Pay settings in macOS System Settings.

  1. Launch Safari on your Mac.
  2. Click Safari in the top menu bar and select Settings (or press Command + ,).
  3. Click the AutoFill tab at the top of the settings window.
  4. Locate the Credit cards row. Ensure the checkbox next to Credit cards is enabled.
  5. Click the Edit button positioned directly beside the Credit cards row.
  6. When prompted, place your finger on the Touch ID sensor or enter your Mac administrator password to unlock the credentials list.

Adding a New Payment Card to Safari AutoFill

You can manually register new credit or debit cards before making an online transaction, ensuring the card is immediately available across your Apple devices.

  1. In the unlocked Credit Cards management window, click the Add button (or the + icon at the bottom of the list).
  2. Enter a descriptive name in the Description field (such as Corporate Platinum or Everyday Rewards).
  3. Type the complete card number into the Card Number field. Safari automatically formats the number with appropriate spacing.
  4. Select the Expiration Month and Expiration Year from the drop-down menus.
  5. Enter the Cardholder Name exactly as it appears on the physical card.
  6. Click Done to save the card to your encrypted Keychain.

Editing or Removing Expired Payment Details

When a bank issues a replacement card with a new expiry date or CVV, existing Safari entries must be updated or deleted to avoid payment declines.

  1. Open the Credit Cards AutoFill list in Safari Settings and authenticate with Touch ID.
  2. Click on the card entry you wish to modify.
  3. To update details, double-click the expiry date or cardholder name, type the new values, and click Done.
  4. To delete an obsolete card entirely, select the card from the list and click the Remove button.
  5. Confirm the removal when prompted. The card will be permanently deleted from Safari AutoFill across all devices syncing with your iCloud account.

Security Considerations and CVV Verification

For security compliance, Safari AutoFill stores only the card number, cardholder name, and expiry date. Safari never permanently stores the 3-digit or 4-digit security code (CVV/CVC) on your Mac or in iCloud Keychain. When AutoFill populates checkout fields on an e-commerce website, you will still be prompted to manually enter the CVV code from the back of your physical card, guaranteeing an essential layer of anti-fraud protection.
