Whether you are archiving research articles, saving online purchase receipts, or compiling reading material for an offline flight, converting web pages into PDF documents is an essential digital skill. However, using standard browser print dialogues often results in awkward page splits, cut-off images, and pages cluttered with advertising banners and sidebar widgets. Safari on macOS includes specialized tools designed to create pristine, distraction-free PDF copies of web pages.
Two Ways to Create PDFs in Safari on Mac
Depending on whether you want an exact visual replica of a webpage or a formatted, book-quality reading copy, Safari provides two built-in solutions:
- Direct Export as PDF: Captures the webpage in its native layout as a continuous, scalable document without requiring virtual printer menus.
- Reader Mode + Print to PDF: Strips away advertising scripts, cookie notices, and navigation clutter, formatting the article into cleanly paginated, book-grade typography before exporting.
Method 1: Export as PDF Directly from the File Menu
This method saves the web page quickly while preserving the authentic visual design and hyperlinked text:
- Open Safari on your Mac and navigate to the webpage or article you wish to save.
- Click on the File menu in the macOS menu bar at the very top of your screen.
- Select Export as PDF… from the dropdown list.
- In the save dialogue window, specify your desired file name and choose a destination folder (such as Documents or Downloads).
- Click Save. Safari will package the page into a searchable PDF file containing clickable hyperlinks and vector text.
Method 2: Use Safari Reader Mode for Pristine, Ad-Free PDFs
For long-form journalism, tutorial guides, and academic papers, converting via Safari Reader yields the cleanest reading experience:
- Navigate to the article in Safari.
- Look at the left side of the address bar. If the page is an article, a small Reader icon (resembling four lines of text) will appear. Click it, or press Shift + Command + R.
- The page will instantly transform into Reader view, eliminating all advertisements, banners, and sidebar distractions.
- Optional: Click the aA button on the right side of the address bar to choose your preferred typeface, text size, and background color prior to export.
- Click on File > Export as PDF… in the menu bar.
- Choose your destination directory and click Save. The resulting PDF will look like a professionally formatted book excerpt.
Pro Tip: Saving PDFs Directly to Apple Books
If you prefer reading saved articles on an iPad or iPhone during your commute, click the Share button in Safari’s top toolbar and select Books. macOS will automatically convert the active page into an optimized PDF document and synchronize it across all your Apple devices via iCloud.
