How to Delete a User on Mac

The Cryptographic Architecture Excision

When an employee departs a company, or when you purchase a used MacBook, simply changing the primary user’s password is a catastrophic security failure. The localized `/Users/` directory contains Gigabytes of cached emails, browser cookies, application states, and the master cryptographic keychain for that specific profile. To mathematically sanitize the operating system and reclaim SSD storage sectors without executing a thermonuclear factory reset, you must instruct the macOS WindowServer to cleanly unbind the target user from the system and execute a recursive wipe of their personal architecture.

How to Delete a User on Mac

You cannot execute this mathematical surgery on a profile that is currently active in RAM. You must be logged into a completely separate Administrator account to initiate the deletion sequence.

1. Summon the Master Architecture:
* Ensure you are logged into a master Admin account. You cannot delete the account you are currently using.
* Click the Apple Logo in the absolute top-left corner of the master menu bar.
* Select System Settings (or “System Preferences” on macOS Monterey and older).
2. Navigate the Telemetry Matrix:
* In the left-hand navigation sidebar, scroll down and click exactly on Users & Groups.
* (If you are on an older OS, you must click the gold padlock icon in the bottom-left corner and enter your password to unlock the matrix).
3. The Target Acquisition:
* You are now viewing the master OS registry of all active profiles.
* Locate the specific user account you wish to annihilate (e.g., “Contractor”).
* On macOS Ventura/Sonoma: Click the small “i” (Information) button next to the target user’s name.
* On macOS Monterey: Click the user’s name in the left column, then click the Minus (-) button at the bottom of the list.
4. The Parameter Definition Phase (The Critical Choice):
* A severe modal window will spawn, asking what you want to do with the user’s `/Home/` folder.
* You must make a mathematical decision:
* Save the home folder in a disk image: The kernel compresses all their data into a `.dmg` file stored in the `/Users/Deleted Users/` directory for legal auditing.
* Don’t change the home folder: The user is deleted from the login screen, but their files remain physically intact in the `/Users/` directory.
* Delete the home folder (The Thermonuclear Option): The kernel shreds the profile from the registry and instantly vaporizes the entire folder, permanently reclaiming the SSD space.
5. The Execution Trigger:
* Select Delete the home folder.
* Click the prominent red button labelled Delete User (or “Delete Account”).
* The macOS kernel instantly executes the recursive wipe, severing the profile’s access to the machine.
