Printing double-sided (technically known as “duplex printing”) is the simplest way to reduce paper waste, lower office costs, and make massive documents easier to staple and read. However, when printing from a Mac, the option to enable double-sided printing is often hidden behind several menus, and its availability depends entirely on the physical capabilities of your printer.
Before attempting to follow these steps, you must verify that your physical printer actually supports automatic duplexing. If you own a basic, $50 inkjet printer, it likely lacks the mechanical rollers required to flip the page over automatically. In that case, no software setting will force it to print double-sided.
How to Enable Double-Sided Printing for a Single Document
If you are trying to print a document from an application like Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, Safari, or Preview, the print dialog box standardizes the process.
- Open the document you want to print.
- Click File in the top menu bar, then select Print. (Alternatively, press Command (⌘) + P).
- The Print dialog window will appear. Look closely at this window; by default, macOS often displays a simplified, condensed version.
- If you only see basic options (like Copies and Pages), look for a button at the bottom labeled Show Details and click it to expand the full menu.
- Look for a simple checkbox labeled Two-Sided (usually located right below the Orientation icons). Check this box.
Understanding the “Binding” Option
When you check the Two-Sided box, a sub-menu may appear asking about the binding or layout. This tells the printer how you plan to flip the pages when reading.
- Long-Edge binding (Default): This prints the pages so they read like a standard book or magazine. You turn the page horizontally.
- Short-Edge binding: This prints the pages so they flip vertically, like a reporter’s steno pad or a wall calendar.
Select your preference and click Print.
What if the “Two-Sided” Box is Missing or Greyed Out?
If you know for a fact your expensive office printer supports double-sided printing, but the checkbox on your Mac is missing or unclickable, macOS is likely using a generic, limited printer driver instead of the manufacturer’s specific driver.
You must dive into the System Settings to tell the Mac that the duplexer physically exists.
- Click the Apple Logo () in the top-left corner of the menu bar and select System Settings (or System Preferences).
- Scroll down the left sidebar and click on Printers & Scanners.
- Click on your specific printer in the list to open its details.
- Click on the Options & Supplies button.
- A new window will pop up. Click the Options tab at the top.
- You will see a list of hardware features your printer might have. Look for an option labeled Duplex Unit or Two-Sided Printing Accessory.
- Check the box (or toggle it to ‘On’) to tell your Mac the hardware is installed. Click OK.
Now, close the settings, return to your document, and press Command + P again. The Two-Sided checkbox should now be fully accessible.
