When someone emails you a massive, 200-page PDF report, but you only need to forward page 42 to your client, sending the entire document is both unprofessional and a waste of bandwidth. While you could purchase an expensive Adobe Acrobat license to split the document, macOS includes a highly capable PDF extraction tool built directly into the default Preview application. You can extract and save a single page as a brand new, separate PDF file in less than ten seconds using a simple drag-and-drop gesture.
How to Access the Thumbnail Sidebar
To extract a page, you must first be able to see the entire document’s structure.
- Double-click the massive PDF file to open it in Preview.
- Look at the top-left corner of the application window. Click the View Menu icon (it looks like a small rectangle with a sidebar next to it).
- Select Thumbnails from the drop-down menu.
A new vertical sidebar will immediately slide out on the left side of your screen. This sidebar displays a small, visual thumbnail preview of every single page in the 200-page document.
Extracting the Page via Drag-and-Drop
Once the thumbnail sidebar is visible, extracting a page requires zero menus or complex export dialogues.
- Scroll down the thumbnail sidebar until you find the exact page you want to extract (e.g., page 42).
- Move your mouse slightly to the side so you can see a blank area of your Mac’s Desktop (or open a Finder window next to the Preview app).
- Click and hold your mouse button down directly on the thumbnail of page 42.
- Drag that thumbnail physically outside of the Preview application window and drop it onto your Desktop.
macOS will instantly generate a brand-new, single-page PDF file on your Desktop containing only the data from page 42. The original 200-page document remains completely untouched and intact.
Extracting Multiple Pages Simultaneously
If you need to extract a specific chapter (e.g., pages 42 through 45), the process is identical. In the thumbnail sidebar, click on page 42. Then, hold down the Shift key and click on page 45. All four pages will highlight in grey. Click and drag the entire block of highlighted thumbnails onto your Desktop, and Preview will instantly compile them into a new, four-page PDF document.
