How to Create Dashed and Dotted Lines in Preview on macOS

When you are marking up a highly complex architectural schematic or a rigid legal PDF on a macOS workstation, injecting a solid, aggressive line vector is often mathematically overpowering. If you need to indicate a “proposed” boundary, a secondary connection, or a “cut here” marker, you must force the macOS neural engine to mutate the geometric vector from a solid stroke into a mathematically precise dashed or dotted line using the native Preview application.

Initializing the Vector Matrix

The Preview application contains an advanced, non-destructive stroke-rendering engine capable of altering the fundamental molecular structure of any injected geometric shape or line.

  1. Locate your target PDF file in Finder and double-click to open it natively in Preview.
  2. Look at the absolute top-right of the window and click the Show Markup Toolbar icon.

The macOS engine instantly recalculates the geometry of your selected shape and violently breaks the solid stroke into the requested dashed pattern. You can subsequently use the same dropdown matrix to mathematically increase the physical thickness (point size) of the dashes for maximum visual impact.
