How to Turn On the Do Not Disturb Mode on a Mac

The Attention Fracture Vector

A modern Mac is a hub of constant digital communication. Between iMessage pop-ups, Slack notifications, email banners, and calendar alerts, attempting to execute deep, focused work (like writing code or editing a video) is nearly impossible. Every visual banner that drops down from the top-right corner of your screen fractures your attention. To achieve a state of flow, you must temporarily sever the operating system’s ability to interrupt you visually and audibly.

How to Turn On Do Not Disturb Mode

Apple has integrated this silence protocol directly into the primary Control Centre, allowing you to deafen the operating system with a single click.

1. Look at the absolute top-right corner of your Mac’s screen, in the primary menu bar.
2. Locate the Control Centre icon (it looks like two horizontal slider switches, situated directly to the left of the date and time). Click it.
3. The Control Centre panel will drop down. Look for the section featuring a purple crescent moon icon, labelled Focus. (In older versions of macOS, this was simply called “Do Not Disturb”).
4. Click anywhere on the word “Focus” or the moon icon.
5. A secondary menu will expand, displaying your various Focus profiles.
6. Click on Do Not Disturb.
7. The Visual Confirmation: The purple crescent moon icon will instantly materialize in your primary menu bar at the top of the screen, permanently residing next to the Wi-Fi icon.

The blockade is now active. All incoming notifications, emails, and messages will be silently collected in the Notification Centre. Your screen will not flash, and no sounds will play. To disable the blockade and allow the alerts to flood in, simply click the purple moon icon in the menu bar and click “Do Not Disturb” again to uncheck it.
