macOS boasts deep integration between its core applications. If you create an event in the Calendar app and include a physical location (like a restaurant name or a street address), macOS automatically turns that text into a clickable link. While convenient, the operating system sometimes takes this a step further. If you receive a calendar invite and click to view the details, or if an alert pops up shortly before the event, macOS may automatically launch the Apple Maps application in the background, plotting the route based on your current location. If you are on a slow connection or simply do not need driving directions, this sudden launch is an annoying interruption.
Breaking the App Link
To keep your mapping deliberate and stop macOS from automatically launching Apple Maps when interacting with Calendar events, you must restrict the data parsing within the Calendar settings.
Unfortunately, Apple does not provide a single “do not open Maps” switch. You must change how the Calendar interprets data. Open the Calendar app. In the top-left menu bar, click on Calendar and select Settings (or Preferences). Navigate to the Alerts tab. Here, you will find settings for “Time to Leave” alerts. Ensure Time to Leave is completely unchecked. This specific feature relies heavily on background Apple Maps queries to calculate travel times based on current traffic. By disabling “Time to Leave,” you sever the most aggressive link between the two applications, significantly reducing the chances of Maps launching itself when you interact with your daily schedule.
