Why Does the Music Stop When I Take Out an AirPod?
If you are listening to Apple Music, Spotify, or watching a YouTube video on your Mac while wearing AirPods, you might notice that taking just one AirPod out of your ear instantly pauses whatever is playing.
This is a hardware feature called “Automatic Ear Detection.” Optical sensors inside the AirPods detect when they are removed from your ear and automatically send a pause signal to macOS. While great for having a quick conversation in the office, it is incredibly annoying if you simply want to rest one ear or adjust the fit without interrupting your podcast. You can disable this sensor behavior entirely.
How to Turn Off Automatic Ear Detection on Mac
You can change how your Mac interacts with your AirPods via the Bluetooth settings.
- Ensure your AirPods are currently connected to your Mac and are actively in your ears. (The settings menu will not appear if they are in the case).
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your screen.
- Select System Settings… (or System Preferences).
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on the name of your AirPods (e.g., “John’s AirPods Pro”). Alternatively, click on Bluetooth, then click the “i” info icon next to your AirPods.
- Scroll down the list of options until you find the toggle switch labelled Automatic Ear Detection.
- Toggle the switch to the Off position.
Once disabled, your AirPods act like standard “dumb” Bluetooth headphones. You can take one out, set it on your desk, and your music or video will continue playing out of the remaining earbud without any interruption.
