When you must transmit a legal PDF or financial document on a macOS workstation that contains highly sensitive data (like Social Security numbers or banking routing codes), simply drawing a black rectangle over the text is mathematically insecure; the underlying vector text can still be highlighted, copied, and extracted by hostile actors. To force the macOS Core Graphics engine to execute an absolute, destructive redaction that permanently destroys the underlying data, you must deploy the Redact tool within Preview.
Executing the Destructive Redaction Matrix
The Preview engine contains a deeply integrated, military-grade redaction subroutine. It does not merely overlay a black box; it mathematically shreds the underlying text vectors and permanently rewrites the file architecture.
- Locate your target classified PDF file in Finder and double-click to open it natively in Preview.
- Look at the absolute top menu bar. Click the View menu and select Show Markup Toolbar (or execute the hotkey: Shift + Cmd + A).
- On the newly spawned Markup Toolbar, locate the Redact icon (it visually resembles a solid black geometric square). Click it to arm the weapon system.
- The macOS kernel will instantly spawn a high-priority warning modal, explicitly stating that redacting content will permanently remove it from the document structure. Tap OK.
Deploying the Vector Shredding Sequence
- With the Redact tool armed, click and hold your cursor at the beginning of the sensitive text string.
- Drag the cursor across the text. The engine will render a black, geometric overlay box perfectly fitted to the text dimensions.
- The exact millisecond you release the mouse button, the redaction is executed visually, but the data is still in volatile memory.
- To execute the absolute, irreversible destruction of the data, you must close the document or press Cmd + S to save.
- Upon saving, the Core Graphics engine intercepts the payload, mathematically deletes the vector text data residing beneath the black boxes, and writes the sterilized file to your hard drive. It is now impossible for any software to extract the redacted strings.
