How to Pin Important Conversations in Messages on Mac

As incoming text messages, two-factor authentication codes, and promotional notifications accumulate in the macOS Messages app, finding frequently contacted family members, close friends, or active work teams can become difficult. In macOS, Apple allows you to pin up to nine essential conversations to the very top of your message list. Pinned chats appear as prominent circular avatars displaying contact photos, live typing indicators, and message snippet bubbles, ensuring your top contacts remain permanently accessible.

Pinning Conversations Using Drag-and-Drop

The most intuitive way to pin a conversation on your Mac is using a direct cursor gesture.

  1. Launch the Messages app from your Dock, Applications folder, or Spotlight.
  2. In the conversation sidebar on the left, locate the contact or group chat you wish to pin.
  3. Click and hold the conversation thread, then drag it upward toward the top of the sidebar.
  4. Drop the conversation into the dedicated pinning area above the main list.

The conversation instantly transforms into a large circular avatar. If the contact has an assigned profile photo, Memoji, or group icon, it will display prominently in the pinned cluster.

Pinning Conversations via the Context Menu

If you prefer using keyboard shortcuts or secondary clicks rather than dragging across the screen:

  1. In the Messages sidebar, right-click (or Control-click) on the conversation thread.
  2. From the popup context menu, select Pin.
  3. The chat will automatically animate into the pinned section at the top of the window.

Managing and Reordering Pinned Chats

You can pin up to nine distinct conversations concurrently. You can organise their presentation to match personal communication habits:

  • Reordering Avatars: Click and hold any pinned circular badge, then drag it to a new position within the top grid to reorganise your priority contacts.
  • Viewing Active Activity: Pinned conversations feature dynamic visual cues. When a pinned contact is typing, three animated dots appear above their avatar. When an unread message arrives, a preview dialogue bubble appears directly attached to the circle.
  • Cross-Device Sync: Your pinned conversation layout automatically syncs with your iPhone and iPad via iCloud Keychain and Messages in iCloud, maintaining a unified chat experience across your Apple ecosystem.

Unpinning a Conversation

When a temporary group project concludes or you wish to replace a pinned slot with a new contact, you can easily remove the thread from the pinned tray:

  1. Right-click (or Control-click) the circular pinned avatar at the top of Messages.
  2. Select Unpin from the contextual menu.
  3. Alternatively, click and drag the pinned badge downwards back into the chronological conversation list.

Unpinning a chat does not delete any messages or media; the thread simply returns to its normal chronological position in the sidebar.
