The Disappearing Clock
macOS features a persistent Menu Bar across the very top of the screen, housing the Apple menu, application-specific commands, and essential system tray icons like the clock and Wi-Fi status. However, to maximize screen real estate, macOS is often configured to automatically hide this Menu Bar under specific conditions—most notably when you enter full-screen mode in an application, but occasionally even on the standard desktop. When hidden, you must physically push your mouse cursor against the top edge of the screen, wait for a short animation, and then interact with the bar. This constant disappearing act is highly frustrating for users who rely on glancing at the time or battery percentage.
Pinning the Menu Bar
To ensure your critical system information is always visible at a glance and stop macOS from automatically hiding the Menu Bar, you must explicitly lock it to the top of your screen in the system settings.
Click the Apple logo in the extreme top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings from the dropdown menu. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, scroll down and click on Control Center. (In older versions of macOS, this setting was located under the “Dock & Menu Bar” or “General” pane). Scroll down the right-hand side until you locate the section specifically dedicated to the Menu Bar. Look for a dropdown menu labelled Automatically hide and show the menu bar. Click this dropdown menu. You will likely see options like “Always,” “On Desktop Only,” or “In Full Screen Only.” To permanently pin the bar so it never vanishes under any circumstance, select the option explicitly labelled Never. The Menu Bar will instantly lock into place.
